Get a taste of Austin indie rock on Wednesday, Oct. 1, when the Texas sextet Okkervil River headlines a show at WorkPlay. The band, which took its name from a short story by Russian author Tatyana Tolstaya, at times has a pleasant poppy sound that might remind you of the Old 97s, and at other times can be intense, almost pop-punk. After releasing their own debut CD, Stars Too Small to Use, Okkervil River got its big break a decade ago at South by Southwest and has since put out eight more albums, including last year’s The Stage Names. Crooked Fingers and Black Joe Lewis share the bill. The show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $14 in advance, and the show is open to all ages.
