Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford has big plans for the Alabama State Fairgrounds, plans that will cost big money and (more importantly) more bonds. At the City Council meeting Tuesday, Langford said that he would soon roll out plans for an “Olympic Village.”
The Olympic Village would include equestrian facilities, a natatorium (a fancy word for an indoor competition swimming pool) and high-rise dormitories where the athletes can live.
The plan would cost $90 million, Langford said. The money would come from more bonds.
The mayor’s office will give a more detailed presentation to the city council at a special-called Committee of the Whole meeting Thursday at 2 p.m.

You have got to be f’ing kidding me. Seriously? Olympic Village? Equestrians?
Does anyone else think Langford just runs with the first crazy thing that comes out of his mouth every day?

What in the WORLD does Birmingham need with an Olympic Village???? Seriously, is this a priority? Is LaLa mental? Is it the pain killers? I just don’t understand. When is the Olympics coming to Birmingham? What about the stadium? What about schools? What about crime/cameras/police cars/grocery stores/computers? I mean shoot, I guess I should just let my husband go ahead and get that Porsche he wants, because we for DANG sure don’t need that either.

Don’t let Langford’s project of the moment distract us from the real issue of his mayoralty: the great damage it probably will do our already damaged city.
The entertainment, now named The Forge, is supposed to revived our woebegone downtown. But Performa Entertainment and John Elkington, its front man, will be as beneficial for Birmingham, as Langford’s buddy and financial angel’s “bond swaps” have been for the County. Google Performa Entertainment and Elkington and see how many stalled, unfinanced, incomplete downtown redevelopment projects it has.
Interesting that Langford and his allies have ruined a number of public facilities (see Cooper Green Hosp.). One hopes the Feds will do for the city and county what they have done for the state’s two-year college system. Force the ouster of the miscreants amongst us.
