Bruno's downfall underscores Bham's Fortune 500 decline

By Matt Hooper
A depressing, yet necessary read courtesy of The News' Russell Hubbard today. Believe it or not, Birmingham was home to six Fortune 500 companies just 10 years ago. But over time, by way of bankruptcy, fraud and mergers, the number has dwindled down to one - Regions Financial Corp. The most recent local star to burnout is Bruno's Supermarkets. Once the city's most sophisticated grocery store, the chain is facing liquiditiy unless a buyer can be found soon. And by soon, we mean like, within the hour. (Source: The Birmingham News)
