Indie film alert: Frost/Nixon and more

By Glenny Brock

It's a rare good weekend for Birmingham film fanatics, as the local cineplexes actually have something besides blockbuster claptrap. Thank every god you can think of for Oscar nominations.

Rave Vestavia Hills 10 has The Reader, The Wrestler and Revolutionary Road.

Frost/Nixon is at Carmike Summit 16 and Regal Trussville 16, as is Slumdog Millionaire.

The UAB Foreign Film Series continues on Tuesday, Jan. 27, with the Chinese film Still Life. That screening is free and starts at 8 p.m. All films in the Foreign Film Series are shown at the Hulsey Recital Hall, 950 13th St. South.

Next weekend looks almost as promising, if for no other reason than the Alabama premiere of a wacky comedy (and musical and documentary and tragedy) called Courting Condi, about a man whose sole objective in life is to win the heart of Condoleezza Rice. That screening starts at 7 p.m. in the Alumni Auditorium of the UAB Hill University Center, 14th St. South and University Blvd. Check out the trailer below.
