Robyn Hitchcock gets his due on DVD

By Brent Thompson
robynhitchock

You probably know Robyn Hitchcock's name but you probably can't hum one of his songs. For more than 30 years, the English singer/songwriter has actively recorded and performed while flying under the radar of commercial success. But while Hitchcock's songs don't resonate across the FM airwaves, he has garnered immense respect among his peers. The DVD Sex, Food, Death...And Insects takes viewers behind-the-scenes as Hitchcock forms his backing band Venus 3 and tours the U.S. in support of his album Ole Tarantula.

In addition to conversations with John Paul Jones, Nick Lowe and Gillian Welch among others, Sex, Food, Death is a chronicle of the creative process as viewers gain access into Hitchcock's songwriting and song arranging. REM fans will find an added bonus as guitarist Peter Buck and REM touring members Scott McCaughey and Bill Rieflin comprise Hitchcock's touring band Venus 3. In addition to featuring Hitchcock's best-known songs including "I Often Dream Of Trains" and "Uncorrected Personality Traits," the DVD includes eight unreleased songs set to be released later this year. Live footage includes performances at famed U.S. venues including Maxwell's in Hoboken, NJ and Seattle's Crocodile Club.

Sex, Food, Death serves as both an introduction for curious newcomers and a long-awaited souvenir for established Hitchcock fans. Music DVDs have become a dime a dozen but Sex, Food, Death is well worth an hour of any pop music fan's time. www.aetn.com
