a great event for every day
Reel Raffle. I like going to raffles especially when there is a chance to win. This raffle isn’t just for a rinky-dink iPod, it is for $10,000. Sidewalk Film Festival is holding a raffle tonight from 6 to 9pm to raise money for their cause. The $150 ticket does include catered food and drinks from ROJO and admits two (2) people. The best part is that there will only be 150 tickets sold maximum so everyone has a 1:150 chance of winning and as a gambler myself I can tell you I have wagered far more for far worse odds. Go check it out and have some fun and hey, you may even win. To be presented by Alabama Moving Image Association at the Kress Building.
Noche Flamenca live at UAB’s Alys Stephens Center. Noche Flamenca has been around for 15 plus years and wows audiences around the world with their unique show. Upon hearing of their coming to Birmingham I thought it a worthwhile event to showcase seeing as the reputation and reviews they receive everywhere from their home in Madrid to Los Angeles make the show out to be sensational. For those who are not familiar with Flamenco, it is a style of dance which is very emphatic and can convey emotions from the point of the dancer’s story. This show will definitely be worth checking out and should be a good “date night”. Show will be at the Alys Stephens Center and tickets are $59.50, $49.50, $39.50; student tickets $20. Call 205-975-2787 or visit www.AlysStephens.org. There is also going to be an after party and tickets for that are $10.
My Fair Lady. Getting bored with the tired old dinner and a movie routine? Try dinner and Broadway. Broadway in Birmingham has a ton of fantastic productions this season and this weekend they are running My Fair Lady. One of the longest running plays on Broadway, My Fair Lady will undoubtedly be a phenomenal performance and still another great “date night.” This play is extremely popular so do expect a large crowd. I would suggest getting tickets in advance for Saturday night as they have been on sale since Oct. 7th. However, the play does run the entire weekend. Tickets range from $25 to $65 but please call (205)- 458-8489 for more information.
2012 Alabama International Auto Show. Just can’t get enough of that new car smell? Then definitely go down to the BJCC this weekend for the 2012 Alabama International Auto Show. It doesn’t matter if you prefer domestic or imports there will be plenty of 2012 models of both varieties and makes available to gawk at. This is a very large event which will take up the entire BJCC complex. Also, there will also be an opportunity to even test drive Chevy’s new makes and models at the GM Experience the Drive exhibit. The auto show will be around all weekend and it only costs eight bucks for adults and four for the children. So rev your engines up and burn rubber down to the BJCC this weekend.
An Evening With Tom Brokaw Tom Brokaw has taken time out of his busy schedule to help out the kids at Children’s of Alabama by participating in a benefit book signing at the DoubleTree Hotel. Anything that benefits children in need is a worthy endeavor and of course meeting a celebrity while in the process isn’t too shabby as well. Brokaw is not only a very accomplished journalist but he is also a bestselling author with his book, “The Greatest Generation”. Tom will be signing his newest book “The Time of Our Lives: Past, Present, Promise.” General Admission Tickets are only $39 and include admission to the show and a signed copy of Tom Brokaw’s latest book. Reception tickets are $150 and include a personalized, signed first edition of Brokaw’s newest book as well as admission to the show with an opportunity to meet Brokaw. The private reception with Brokaw will begin at 7:00 p.m. the main event starts at 8:00 p.m.
Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band Yes it’s true, he is older now but still “running against the wind” tonight at the BJCC Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band will be performing. I will be attending this concert as we really missed out on a lot of concerts this summer due to the new amphitheater in T-town. Apparently the first leg his tour was a big success in the eyes of fans and critics alike so Seger is gearing up for the second run of his North American Tour. You can purchase tickets via the internet on Ticketmaster or by calling the BJCC ticket office at 800-745-3000.
“Well Hell”. Last week on Wednesday I gave a shout out to Tavern at the Summit and kept it classy with a bottle of Mark West pinot noir. After the Bama game on Saturday I think cheap liquor is in order for this week. So I’m going to take advantage of Black Market Bar’s “Well Hell” night in the Colonnade. C’mon, dollar drinks are going to keep your bar tab looking like a McDonalds receipt and these days saving a few bucks is all the rage! I am not going to tell you to drink responsibly but seriously, call a cab, dollar drinks can get gnarley. If you get hungry the food up there is actually really good, try the empanadas. Thursday, November 17th, 2011.
Beer on the Backporch. Yet another good FUNdraiser comes our way with the third installment of Beer on the Backporch at the Ruffner Mountain Nature Center. Make sure and come out to support the nature center it’s only 20 dollars a person and it includes food, beer and music all from local vendors and artists. Everyone will be hanging out and enjoying the festivities on the picnic pavilion so do not be left out. The fundraiser starts at 6pm and runs until 10pm.
