Using a rain barrel to catch the water pouring off of your roof is a simple way to conserve city water, reduce the strain on storm sewers and provide low-cost irrigation for your home garden. The Alabama Cooperative Extension System (ACES) is offering a rain barrel workshop open to the general public on Tues., July 14, from 1-3 p.m., at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, 2612 Lane Park Road. The workshop will include instructions on how to make a rain barrel and attach it to the downspout of a home gutter system. One attendee will win the rain barrel completed during the demonstration by a random drawing to be held at the end of the program. The cost is $5, payable at the door, but you must pre-register by Mon., July 13. Call ACES at (205) 879-6964 ext. 10 or email Tony Glover at gloveta@aces.edu.
