A audit conducted by the Alabama Public Examiner's Office has found that Jefferson County Commissioner Shelia Smoot received both a county car and a car allowance for 11 months in 2005 and 2006. According to a Birmingham News report, much of the blame for Smoot's situation was levied against Jefferson County and no recommendations were directed at Commissioner Smoot personally.

Smoot was issued a county car on Nov. 8. 2005, just nine days after receiving her first car allowance. Over the next year, she received a total of $5,532.18 in allowances. According to state law, county commissioners are allowed a choice of either a car or the allowance, but not both. (Source: The Birmingham News)
