Bertha Vazquez, a science instructor at Carver Middle School in Coral Gables, Fla., has won the Richard C. Bartlett Education Award -- given annually by the National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF) -- for successfully integrating environmental lessons into her teaching. Honored with Vazquez were Susan Vincent and Patrick Curley. To learn more, go to www.neefusa.org. Vazquez and her students helped recycle 6,000 pounds of paper and plastic, planted dozens of trees and bushes on the school’s campus, and started a school-wide energy conservation program. Do you know a teacher in Birmingham who’s doing cool stuff to teach kids about the environment? Write us at jesse@bhamweekly.com.
