The American Hiking Society (AHS) invites you to take part in National Trails Day, the organization’s annual celebration of America's trail system. More than 1,500 events will take place around the country on June 6, according to an AHS release, including hiking, running, biking, paddling, bird watching, trail maintenance and trail celebrations. The purpose of the event is to inspire people to take part in activities that protect green space, educate the public regarding the importance of trails and increase interest in outdoor activities. If your organization would like to host an event or to find out more about Trails Day, call Heather Sable, AHS Trail Programs Manager, at (800) 972-8608 ext. 204 or visit www.americanhiking.org. For information about the AHS, visit the web site or call (301) 565-6704. By the way, a look at the site reveals only one event in Alabama, National Trails Day at Blakeley. This 4-mile walk at Blakely Historic State Park in Spanish Fort just east of Mobile is sponsored by the Alabama Hiking Trail Society Gulf Coast Chapter. The park is located on the banks of the Mobile-Tensaw Delta, the second largest river delta in the U.S. For information, call (252) 533-1812 or go to www.hikealabama.org.
