Indie film alert '96 THE BAND'S VISIT

By Glenny Brock
It's tough to be a movie-lover in Birmingham (altho Sidewalk does provide some relief). The local cinemas rarely include art-house or independent films in their lineups, opting instead for blockbuster pablum that we accept without complaint. For those with more discerning tastes, the Levite Jewish Community Center has an ongoing independent film series. Tonight, Tuesday, Sept. 9, the featured film is The Band's Visit, the knockout debut from Israeli writer and director Eran Kolirin, which had its world premiere in Egypt earlier this year.

Show time is 7 p.m. and all films at the LJCC are open to the public. The requested $5 donation includes popcorn and soda. The LJCC is located at 3960 Montclair Road, adjacent to Trinity (Baptist Montclair) Medical Center. For more information, call (205) 879-0411.
