On Thursday, September 27, three great bands with ties to Birmingham will each play a set at Avondale Bricks Gallery to preview their upcoming shows in the neighborhood.
On September 27, The Great Book of John will be previewing their full show of Radiohead meets Hanks Williams style music on October 4 at Spring Street Firehouse, just down the street from Avondale Bricks Gallery.
With his incredible a capella voice, Sanders Bohlke will be doing a solo set to preview his full band's show later the same night at Bottletree, just around the corner from Avondale Bricks.
Lauren-Michael Sellers will bring her original song-writing and haunting sounds to the mix on Thursday. She can be heard Saturdays at the Pepper Place Market, just a few blocks away from Avondale Bricks Gallery--where, of course, you can hear her Thursday, September 27.
Avondale Bricks is located at 130 41st Street South in Avondale, catty corner across the street from the Avondale Brewery.
The music will be accompanied by a wine tasting. $15 cover for three bands, food, and light hors d'oeuvres.
The Great Book of John
The Great Book of John is led by Taylor Shaw — founding guitarist of Birmingham Alabama’s late, great Wild Sweet Orange. Shaw’s music is eminently lyrical – recalling Jeff Buckley’s psychedelic soul, Leonard Cohen’s poetic (and lacerating) wordplay, and fiery fretwork influenced by Stevie Ray Vaughn and David Gilmour as much as it is by Radiohead. Yes, those are big names to drop, but this is big music – emotional, filmic, but never pandering. Dreams writ large but still cryptic and surreal. And though these songs almost ceaselessly flow from Shaw, The Great Book of John is very much a band – and a formidable one at that. Along with fellow WSO alumni vocalist Bekah Fox, bassist Alex Mitchell, drummer Chip Kilpatrick, and keyboardist Garrett Kelly The Great Book of John can conjure the sublime in any setting – with or without electricity.

Sanders Bohlke
Raised in the small, north Mississippi town of Sardis, Sanders Bohlke stumbled onto the music scene somewhat by accident, after recording a folk album in the nearby indie-music hub of Oxford. This self-titled first release was hailed as passionate and praised for its honesty.

Remember in the Dark What You Saw in the Light is more than just the title for Lauren-Michael Sellers’s forthcoming album. It is a mantra that served as an endearing inspiration for the Birmingham-based singer/songwriter’s quiet evenings spent in the Birmingham-Southern College chapel.
