I know that some of you were not born yet before my friend Yvonne was blinded by Thomas Dolby´s science in highs school in the ‘80s. Dolby started in London´s punk scene that was raging at the time--with authentic, not fake like some current bands we will not name, appropriated punk ethic. Dolby says that much of his still vibrant and relevant energy has its source in that London punk scene.
Dolby was also way ahead of his time back then in many ways. He was talking about wireless technology and wired connections, just to name a couple. That ambience permeates his original great hit, "She Blinded Me with Science".
Nowadays with the advances in technology, anyone can make an album (if you can still call it that), and Dolby is almost like a traditionalist, insisting on writing songs that tell stories and have a real musical structure instead of just falling into a groove.
And Dolby is bringing the conceptual underpinnings of his musical career to Birmingham in a concrete way, with a converted trailer, the kind we know very well down here, dubbed a traveling ‘Time Capsule’, that will allow fans to enter and record a 30-second message to the future. The best of thousands of selections Dolby intends to send into outer space with the X Project. Of course.
