Ongoing Exhibits Variations. by Matt Wycoff at beta pictoris gallery Jan 27 – Mar 3. VARIATIONS, is New York based artist Matt Wycoff ’s first solo exhibition with the gallery. Over the past ten years Wycoff ’s work has covered a wide range of conceptual, stylistic and material approaches. VARIATIONS brings together four major works from this period, two text pieces from 2006 - 2007 and two large-scale abstract paintings from 2011. The works on view are drawn from what appear to be two visually and conceptually distinct bodies of work. The exhibition is less about the differences between the works, however, and more about the experience of the viewer as they find the underlying themes that tie them together.
What Makes the Magic City so Magical? Feb 27-March 23, Vulcan Park and Museum. Ever wondered what it is exactly that helps Birmingham live up to its nickname? Where is the magic in the Magic City? Head over to Vulcan Park and see what some local high school artists have to say about it. Students from Ramsay High School demonstrate through their art an aspect of the community that really means something to them. They answer the question, and beg you to ask yourself the same!
Dragons and Lotus Blossoms: Vietnamese Ceramics from the Birmingham Museum of Art. Jan 22- April 8. Through meticulously collecting fine pieces and receiving a recent, generous donation by Mr. William M. Spencer III, the Birmingham Museum of Art has become home to the largest exhibition devoted solely to Vietnamese ceramics in the world. Boasting over 200 gorgeous pieces, many incredibly preserved, unique, and undamaged, the Birmingham exhibit is one of the three finest Vietnamese ceramic collections in North America; the other two being in Boston and New York. There is also an accompanying catalogue with essays by ceramic experts John Stevenson, Phillipe Troung, and Donald A. Wood. Don’t miss out on this impressive collection!
UAB School of Medicine Art Show. Feb 13 – May 11, Alabama Museum of Health Sciences, 1700 University Blvd. Where better to witness the evolution of medicine than right here in Birmingham? This unique art exhibit represents 700 years worth of instruments, specimens, and models used throughout the world by healthcare professionals, and outlines the struggles, radical challenges, and breakthroughs made globally in the health profession. Students, residents, and faculty have contributed to this show, giving you the opportunity to take an amazing and authentic look at the history behind medicine, a hugely thriving part of this city.
“Darkness Into Life” Holocaust Exhibit and Lecture Series. Feb 6-March 8, Birmingham Southern College. Two exhibits will be housed on the main level of the N.E. Miles/ C.A. Rush Library. “The Courage to Remember” is a 40-piece colored poster exhibit that charts the course of the Holocaust. “Children of the Holocaust” is a collection of literature on the Holocaust and genocide published for children and young adults. This is the first time these collections have visited BSC. The exhibit in the Durbin Gallery can be viewed during the college’s regular business hours.
The Look of Love. Feb 7 - June 10, Birmingham Museum of Art. This stunning exhibition explores the little known subject of “lover’s eyes,” hand-painted miniatures of single human eyes set in jewelry and given as tokens of affection or remembrance. With 98 examples, the collection of Dr. and Mrs. David A. Skier of Birmingham is the largest in the world. This exhibition offers an unprecedented look at these unusual and intriguing works of art. The exhibition is accompanied by a full color, hardbound catalogue of the same name, edited by Dr. Graham C. Boettcher, The William Cary Hulsey Curator of American Art, and published by D Giles Ltd., London. An essay by Elle Shushan sets the historical scene and examines the role of lover’s eyes in the broader context of Georgian and early Victorian portrait miniatures. Additionally, novelist and biographer Jo Manning offers five fictional vignettes imagining the circumstances surrounding the creation of these extraordinary objects.
