New Year's Revolution

By Haley Hunt Castille

It’s the third week of the New Year and you haven’t made it to the gym yet to lose those pounds contracted in your New Year’s Resolution, so you’ve decided that it’s just too late to stick with it and you go for another handful of greasy bad decisions. Maybe it’s the cigarettes you were hoping to conquer or maybe the positive energy you set out to really experience in 2012, but three weeks into it, and there hasn’t been too much “resolution.”

Another word for resolution is pledge, promise and even decision. Of course we all want change, but a lot of times those goals only seem to be an “interest,” not a commitment. It’s kind of the American way. We’re a very undisciplined group of people whose steadfastness is easily altered when things get tough or uncomfortable.

“There’s a difference between interest and commitment. When you’re interested in doing something, you do it only when circumstance permit. When you’re committed to something, you accept no excuses, only results.”

This new generation emerging hasn’t taken advantage of understanding that discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishments. We want things now, in a hurry, without a lot of trouble and we typically want it our way. The awesome part of this country is that we have the resources and freedom to reach whatever goals we want to achieve; we’ve just got to find the secret ingredient… discipline.

So how about a New Year’s Revolution? A revolt against self-pity and old habits, and a transformation in our thinking is what we all need. We are the biggest encouragement ourselves have, so let’s start using our words to motivate ourselves. We can’t wait on others to cheer us on; this is a part of self-discipline.

Three weeks late is never too late.

You want to see positive changes in your health? You can do this! Those cigarettes aren’t as strong as you are. Those pounds are destined to melt away when you put your mind to it and practice self-control. That positive energy is waiting to be spoken into existence with your words of affirmation and optimism. Get back on the bike and keep riding.

To reach these goals, we’ve got to have a new mindset and then we have to make a plan. You might not see the results over night, but that’s not the goal. The aim is to create a renewed “life-style” so that when the results do come, they stay that way. A revolution starts war, creates change, launches transformation and establishes new bureaucracy. This is what we need first, then the resolutions will follow.

Don’t give up on your New Year’s goals. You can accomplish anything when you are willing to do what it takes. Are you?
