Beta Pictoris Gallery presents: Willie Cole and Bayete Ross Smith “Dig it!” Opening reception was Dec. 9th, 6-9 pm. December 9th – Jan 21st 2012. Willie Cole is best known for assembling and transforming ordinary domestic and used objects such as irons, ironing boards, high-heeled shoes, hair dryers, bicycle parts, wooden matches, lawn jockeys, and other discarded appliances and hardware, into imaginative and powerful works of art and installations. Bayeté Ross Smith’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally by the San Francisco Arts Commission, Oakland Museum of California, Rush Arts Gallery, Leica Gallery, MoMA P.S.1, Duetsche Bank, Goethe Institute (Ghana), and Zacheta National Gallery of Art (Poland). His collaborative film with the Cause Collective screened at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival. His accolades include fellowships and residencies with the Laundromat Project, Brooklyn, New York, McColl Center for Visual Art, Charlotte, North Carolina, the Kala Institute, Berkeley, California, and Can Serrat Art Center, Barcelona, Spain.

Birmingham based artist Clayton Colvin has developed a practice of painting that is both challenging and seductive. He uses a hybrid of figurative and abstract approaches to create delicate, fantastic, and concrete spaces. The immediate and intimate nature of drawing infuses his linen panels with an hypnotic mix of familiarity and mystery.
Birmingham Civil Rights Institute Celebrates 20 years of collecting with new Visions exhibit on January 10, 2012. The mission of the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute (BCRI) is to promote civil and human rights worldwide through education. Opened in 1992, BCRI presents an in-depth look at the Civil Rights Movement through time, from before the movement’s inception through today’s international struggle for universal human rights. BCRI is more than just a museum; it is a place of research, a teaching facility and an acknowledged learning center for people of all ages and backgrounds. Each year, BCRI reaches more than 140,000 individuals through tours and exhibitions as well as school and community outreach, public programs, special events, and archival collections. Opening Reception and Lecture: Vietnamese Ceramics, the Development of an Art Form Presented by Birmingham Museum of Art January 22, 2012, Dragons and Lotus Blossoms: Vietnamese Ceramics from the Birmingham Museum of Art is the largest exhibition in the United States to date devoted solely to Vietnamese ceramics. The exhibition is co-curated by Donald A. Wood and John Stevenson, internationally recognized scholar and expert on Vietnamese ceramics. The entire Birmingham Museum of Art collection of over two hundred pieces is on display and illustrated in the accompanying catalogue. The catalogue includes essays by John Stevenson, Philippe Truong, and Donald A. Wood.
Capturing Amaryllis: On Canvas Birmingham Botanical Gardens Jan 22. Amaryllis on Canvas is a class designed for beginner through advanced painters. We will explore shadows, highlights and textures. The class will be taught using acrylic paints. We will also discuss prop er brush care. Painters may use basics techniques or may add more flourish if they would like. $25-$30. 2:30 – 5pm.
Artbreak: Who Are these Saints Deciphering Iconography in Art of the Renaissance. Presented by Birmingham Museum of Art at Birmingham Museum of Art January 24, 2012.
