Introduction To Performing Arts Column

By Lee Ann Brown

A night at the theatre! Dinner and a show! A night at the Opera, the ballet, or a night of comedy.

One of the great pleasures in life is catching a live performance, and we are so fortunate to have a pool of talent here offering shows that could rival any on Broadway or L.A.

All those years of having a curfew imposed upon me when I needed to be home with my kids in the evenings, almost made me think that the evening began with dinner at six and ended with falling asleep on the sofa at 9:30. But now that they are almost grown, we have rediscovered a whole world going on out there that might not even get going until then. There are so many more opportunities for your evening entertainment than just plopping down on the sofa and turning on the television, and this column is here to introduce you to some of them, so you can experience them for yourself.

We will bring you interviews with our most talented entertainers, some long time stars of the theatre scene, as well as up and coming new talent. We will also, let you know about some of the major entertainers that are coming to town, as well as the people and places that make it all possible, the theatres, directors, producers, writers, comedians, dancers, etc.

Make it part of your New Year’s Resolution to grab your friends, nudge your spouse awake, and head on out the door to catch what’s going on at one of our local entertainment venues. To get you started here is a list of a few places you might want to checkout. A lot of new shows are opening this next week, so go ahead and take a look at their websites and make your reservations to attend one of their events.

The Stardome Comedy Club The Virginia Samford Theatre The Alys Stephens Center Terrific New Theatre Fresh Ground Comics Red Mountain Theatre Company Birmingham Festival Theatre Ugly Baby Improv The Alabama Ballet AROVA Ballet Birmingham Children’s Theatre Opera Birmingham Beginning next week we will be bringing you more news and information about these different groups and the people behind them, as well as many others.

We hope this will give you some insight into the different types of entertainment available here, as well a what you might expect from the experience, and what went into the making of the show that you get to see, sort of a behind-thescenes peek at the process.

In addition to this, we will let you know about opportunities for you to finally realize your dream and get up on the stage and see what it’s like, such as Open Mic Nights, audience participation improv shows, and Poetry Slams.

I am also please to let you know that there are many shows that cater to a family friendly schedule (so you can see live shows and still call it an early night!) and some that even teens and young adults will be interested to know about. They might even see some of their peers on the stage! And, of course, it’s always nice to have something that you can take the whole family to, that appeals to different age croups, and we will let you know about those, too.

I think you will be amazed at the number of amazingly gifted and talented people that choose to call Birmingham home and that share their talents with the rest of us, and we look forward to introducing them to you and supporting them in their efforts to offer us lucky citizens here in Birmingham the chance to experience the excitement of live performances.
