Barber Vintage Festival

Now for the 7 th year the Barber Vintage Festival is a must for this weekend. This is truly an awesome festival for adults and kids alike with such attractions as the World Famous Barber Swap Meet with 400+ Vendors, “Wall of Death” Stunt Show, Aeroshell Aerobatic Air Show as well as the Century Race which is featuring motorcycles made before 1911. University of Alabama Hockey vs Mississippi State. Bama has a Hockey team?! Yes, they do. The University of Alabama Frozen Tide competes in the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Division III, which is divided into 4 regions. All SEC schools (with the exception of Kentucky) are members of the SECHC (South Eastern Collegiate Hockey Conference) of the South Region. The Tide faces every SECHC team at least once during the regular season and plays for a Conference Championship every February. The SECHC is student run and without funding from the University so come out and show your support. The match will be held at the Pelham Civic Complex & Ice Arena at 7:30pm. Break ‘n Bread 2011 presented by Birmingham Originals Alabama’s premier food and wine event, Break ’n Bread will feature signature dish tastings from nearly 40 Birmingham Originals restaurants paired with a wide selection of wine and beer. ENTERTAINMENT: Festival guests will also be treated to entertainment from American Idol winner and hometown hero TAYLOR HICKS, as well as tunes from Memphis-based singer/songwriter Eliot Morris. FOR THE KIDS: A designated kid’s area will feature activities by the Birmingham Zoo, pumpkin decorating, Children’s Hospital face painting clowns, a DISCO writing workshop, kid’s cooking demos and more. VIP ACCESS: A limited number of VIP tickets are available. A VIP ticket includes all of the above plus food items prepared by four Nashville guest chefs, premium wine and beer, and some covered area seating and service. Masters Games of Alabama. Now this is something for the active Baby Boomer who still has that competitive edge. Masters Games of Alabama is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting healthy lifestyles for active adults age 55 and over through social, mental, and physical activities. They were developed in Oxford, AL in 1990 to provide adults age 55 and above an opportunity to maintain an active lifestyle by participating in a variety of events. While the games provide an Olympic-type atmosphere, the focus is not on competition, but fun and fellowship. Each year there are between 600 and 800 participants from across the state. You must be 55 years of age or older by December 31st of the year you participate and live in the state of Alabama. Alabama Ballet 2nd Tuesday. The season for the Alabama Ballet has just opened and they are currently hosting their 2nd Tuesday Series. This series is an informal Alabama Ballet performance and “studio chat” with Artistic Director Tracey Alvey. What better opportunity will you have to chat it up with ballerinas for Free? Yes, this event is free and open to the public! So make it a date and come enjoy a glass of wine and a behind the scenes glimpse of our Season Productions. Emmet O’neal brownbag lunch on Sloss Furnace. For lunch today stop the Emmet O’Neal Library in Mountain Brook for an intriguing film on Birmingham’s historic Sloss Furnace. The brief one hour film will take you on a journey through Sloss’ transition from its’ industrial age to the arts and cultural destination it has become today. Cocktails in the garden. This is personally one of my favorite events this time of year. Now in its fifth season, Cocktails in The Gardens will host “A Haunted Affair”. There will be music will by Rollin’ in the Hay, a cash bar and complimentary hor d’oeuvres will be offered by Imperial Catering. The evening’s signature drink is Caramel Apple Martini. The doors open at 5:30 and will close at 8:30 p.m. Admission is Free for members and only $15 for non-members whereas; V.I.P. admission is $25 for both members and non-members.
