Review: Will Kimbrough earns his Wings

By Brent Thompson

As a solo artist, former frontman of Will & The Bushmen and acclaimed co-writer (Jimmy Buffett, Todd Snider), Will Kimbrough has stayed true to himself throughout his lengthy career. Known for biting and honest lyrics, the Alabama native has consistently delivered his songs in melodic, straightforward fashion. So when words like "mature," "reflective" and "introspective" come to mind in describing his latest release, Wings [Daphne Records], it seems that perhaps he's lost his edge as an artist. But that's not the case. This is Kimbrough circa 2010, still delivering honest music with a maturity that can only be attained with time, age and experience. Tracks like "Open To Love" - Kimbrough's admitted nod to Van Morrison underpinned by a rich horn section - and the title track (co-written with Buffett) offer rarely-seen sides of Kimbrough that you'll embrace as a listener. Kimbrough has even stated this album is probably his most optimistic recording, complete with an open love letter to his family in the opening track "Three Angels." Newcomers to Kimbrough's music will find Wings to be an inviting introduction and longtime listeners will find this a worthwhile addition to a rich catalog of material.
