The Nature Conservancy has acquired 2,186 acres of forest on top of Lookout Mountain, according to the group’s recent news release. The purchase is part of the Conservancy’s efforts to protect freshwater and forest habitat in the Coosa River basin of northeast Alabama, northwest Georgia and southern Tennessee.
The group bought the land from Hancock Timber Resource Group for $3.6 million. According to the release, Hancock and the Conservancy have worked together for 20 years, protecting nearly 60,000 acres of sensitive lands in the U.S.
Hancock has worked with a variety of environmental groups and government agencies to protect more than 400,000 acres of land across the U.S. as part of its Sensitive Lands Program.
The Conservancy expects to transfer a portion of the tract to the U.S. National Park Service for inclusion in the adjacent Little River Canyon National Preserve in Cherokee County, and the remainder to the State of Alabama for inclusion in the Little River Wildlife Management Area.
