Black Warrior Riverkeeper founder David Whiteside has been doing some work north of us, it seems. He recently founded a new citizen-based environmental protection organization called Tennessee Riverkeeper with Mark Martin, who will serve as the organization’s staff riverkeeper. Whiteside will serve as the organization’s executive director.
Tennessee Riverkeeper will work to protect the Tennessee River from pollution by responding to citizen complaints and monitoring the river itself. The organization has opened an office in Decatur, which is near the center of the river, and plans on opening a second office in Tennessee.
Like Black Warrior Riverkeeper, Tennessee Riverkeeper is part of the Waterkeeper Alliance.
Tennessee Riverkeeper has already received a major endorsement—Drive-By Truckers singer, guitarist and writer Patterson Hood, a native of Muscle Shoals, has lent his support to the organization. To learn more, visit www.TennesseeRiver.org.
