You can expect to read and hear more soon, in Green Space and other local media outlets, about Birmingham’s proposed $3 billion, 55-mile Northern Beltline freeway project. Many business leaders support it as a way to spur development, particularly in northern Jefferson County. Many environmentalists are opposed to the project, fearing negative effects on such waterways as the Cahaba River. The project received national attention last week when a series of reports about the proposed highway and Birmingham’s pathetic mass transit system was aired on The News Hour with Jim Lehrer on PBS. You can watch the reports, called "Zombie Highways," at www.pbs.org/wnet/blueprintamerica. Local environmental group Black Warrior Riverkeeper took the airing of these reports as an opportunity to again register their opposition to the project. For more, go to www.blackwarriorriver.org.
