She made her splash in the '80s as lead singer of The Bangles and he brought melodic pop to '90s alternative rock. But the collective heart of Susanna Hoffs and Matthew Sweet lies in the golden AM radio sounds of the '60s and '70s. The duo's first release - 2006's Under The Covers Vol.1 - mined the music of the '60s and their recently-released follow-up tackles the following decade. Like its predecssor, Under The Covers Vol. 2 mixes some obvious material ("You're So Vain," "Maggie May") with songs that deserve reintroductions (Todd Rundgren's "Couldn't I Just Tell You" and Little Feat's "Willin'"). Throughout the disc's 16 tracks, Sweet & Hoffs place their own stamp on some well-worn material while showing respect and reverence for the original renditions. In addition, some high-profile sit-ins are found on the disc - Lindsey Buckingham appears on Fleetwood Mac's "Second Hand News," Steve Howe guests on the Yes song "I've Seen All Good People"and Dhani Harrison appears on his father George's song "Beware Of Darkness." But in the end, the listener will mainly recall the collective joy in Sweet & Hoffs' voices as they revisit the songs that provided a common foundation for their own careers.
